Bihar Signs Major MoU to Preserve Its Archaeological Heritage
Bihar is taking a big step to protect its ancient history. The state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two leading organisations to boost archaeological research, conservation, and public awareness.
On July 10, 2025, the Directorate of Archaeology, Bihar partnered with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi, and the Academy for Archaeological Heritage Research and Training (AAHRT). This collaboration aims to bring Bihar’s rich historical and cultural legacy into the spotlight, using modern methods and national-level support.
What Is the MoU About?
The MoU is focused on preserving Bihar’s archaeological sites, especially rock art, and on improving research and training. The key areas include:
- Archaeological Surveys and Excavations: Scientific documentation and exploration of Bihar’s ancient sites.
- Workshops, Seminars, and Conferences: Regular academic events to promote learning and exchange of ideas.
- Training Programs for Students and Researchers: Skill-building in excavation techniques, digital mapping, and heritage conservation.
- Heritage Walks and Public Awareness Activities: Events to help people connect with local history and cultural pride.
- Digital Archives and Conservation Labs: Using modern tools to protect artefacts and make data easily accessible.
Why This Matters for Bihar
Bihar is home to several important historical and archaeological sites, many of which are still under-researched or in need of preservation. This new partnership gives the state access to expert knowledge, better resources, and a national platform.
Here’s how this initiative will help:
- Boost Cultural Tourism: Better-managed heritage sites can attract more tourists, which means more jobs and income for locals.
- Improve Education: Students and schools can get hands-on learning through heritage walks and curated study materials.
- Protect Ancient Art and Artefacts: Scientific preservation will reduce damage from time, weather, and theft.
- Involve Local Communities: When people understand the value of their history, they are more likely to protect it.

Rachna Patil, Director of Archaeology, Bihar, called it a major opportunity for scholars.
“This is a big boost for research in Bihar. Now our archaeologists and students can work with the best techniques and experts from across India.”
A national seminar on “Rock Art and Archaeology of India” was also held alongside the MoU signing, where top archaeologists from across the country spoke about the importance of protecting India’s ancient rock art and heritage.
What Happens Next?
The three organisations will now:
- Create a detailed action plan for research and training programs.
- Launch heritage walks and public events to involve citizens and tourists.
- Develop a digital database of Bihar’s archaeological assets with modern documentation tools like 3D scanning.
- Begin work on conservation labs and training centres for heritage protection.
Takeaway
This MoU is a powerful move toward preserving Bihar’s archaeological heritage. With expert help and national-level collaboration, the state is on its way to becoming a hub for research, tourism, education, and cultural pride.
